The areas producing P.D.O. - Protected Designation of Origin - wines are essentially the historical vineyards of the wine-growing and wine-producing regions of Greece. Wine growing zones have been demarcated along boundaries set by local community limits.

In all these zones there are obligations to maintain maximum permitted yields and various other conditions for which the wines are tested.

P.D.O. wines, which must carry the mandatory distinctive red label around the neck of the bottle, must necessarily be produced in wineries located within the designated viticultural zone. Apart from the fact that the grapes must be grown within the zone, the wine must also be made in wineries whose facilities are also inside it.
